William Ramme #14 - 1864 Tax List, Shoestore Inventory

This tax list from 10 October 1864 shows William Ramme being taxed on $72 worth of ready made boots and shoes. The 5% tax brings his tax liability to a total of $3.60. William is recorded on several tax lists throughout the years he operated his shoe store. His probate records give a detailed list of the entire shoestore inventory, accounts receivable and accounts payable at the time of his death.

William Ramme #14 and Marie Wentzel #15 - 1860 Census Detroit, Michigan


William Ramme was a shoemaker in Germany, as noted on his immigration record. He continued in the occupation of shoemaker in the United States. The first record found, so far, of the Ramme family in America is the 1860 US Census. The Rammes lived in Detroit (Ward 4), Wayne County, Michigan. William's occupation is recorded as Shoemaker. Minnie is not living at home at the time, and hasn't been located anywhere on the 1860 Census.

Ship Manifest of the Orpheus - Wilhelm Ramme #14, Marie Wentzel #15, and children

This page of the Orpheus manifest shows Wilhelm, Marie, Heinrich, Caroline and Herman. Herman's name is not recorded, though. He is only noted as "One Suckling". The family members names begin with #111 but Caroline and Herman aren't numbered on the manifest.

The Ramme Family immigrated from Germany to the United States on this ship.
They arrived in New York City on 3 June 1857.
