1911 Census of England - John and Jane (Wallwork) Smith Family

This 1911 England Census image shows the John and Jane (Wallwork) Smith family living at 8 Brandon Grove in Leeds. Living in the household with John and Jane are daughters, Dora Roseanne and Margaret Archer, and daughter-in-law, Carolyn Elvirah, and grand-daughter, Joan Ramme.

Herbert and Carolyn married in Detroit on September 1909 and, sometime before the birth of their oldest child, sailed to England. Herbert and Carolyn's first child, Joan Ramme Smith, was born 27 October 1910 in Leeds. Apparently, Herbert, Carolyn and Joan lived with Herbert's family. During the time the census was taken, Herbert was aboard the ship Amerika, sailing to the US. (See other post for ship manifest showing Herbert A. Smith)

The Four Generation Detroit Home of the Bell and Smith Family

This home is located at 1140 Van Dyke, on the corner of Van Dyke and Agnes in Detroit, Michigan. (The address was 258 Van Dyke in an earlier numbering system.) The first of our ancestors to live in the home were Walter Jerome Bell and his wife, Minnie Ramme. Their youngest daughter, Carolyn owned the house after Walter died. The house was sub-divided into apartments for renters. Some of Carolyn's children lived in the apartments when they were married and starting families of their own.
